Games, Guns, Gazongas

Ah yes, and all the other things that make life worth living.

. . . in the shape of minty. . .

Fine. Here you are, Joe. Happy?

The last 4 months of the year are gonna be hectic. Oh, yes, they will be full of lots of shit, most of which will leave me scrambling for money. For the record -- all of my money woes are my fault, MINE MINE MINE, I refuse to blame anyone because I have periods of no self-control.

But anyway. . . Video games figure prominently in my forecast. This week (or maybe next) is the release date for Darkwatch, the only first-person game since King's Field that has grabbed my attention. Maybe because it's a western theme, instead of WWII or some alien world. . . also, it has vampires. . . Whatever it is about it, I want it! Next month I may have to sell some extra body parts to get some of these games. There's Burnout 4: Revenge, which I must have. Yeah yeah, I haven't done everything there is to do in 3, but still. There's also Midway Arcade Treasures 3, which this time is a collection of their arcade racers, like San Francisco Rush, and Hydro Thunder. I might be able to give that one a miss. There's also a game called S.L.A.I. - Steel Lancer Arena International - that looks very promising. The premise: you build a mech from the ground up, with armor and weapons and special systems and stealth capabilities, and then go try to blast the shit outta everyone else's mech. Also very appealing to me. A few years ago, I played a game called Carnage Hearts for 9 months straight, and I'd still be playing it if Final Fantasy 7 hadn't broken my trance. In Carnage Hearts, you had to design the mech hardware, and then write an AI program for its behavior. That was the selling point for the game, the programming. . . I spent hours and hours and hours making and testing programs, I would sit at work and mumble stuff like "ok, if I had it check for projectiles out to 200m in this step, it would give it enough time to run a sub-weapon sub-routine before evasion. . . " Ah, memories. I still have a card with all my programs on it, I intend to dig that game out again at some point. But I digress. S.L.A.I. looks to be the same kind of experience, but with furious hunt and shoot action instead of programming. October will be the rejoicing of the RPG fan for the PS2, as Wild Arms: Alter Code F and Shining Force Neo are both slated for release. Wheee! Maybe I will finish slogging through Xenosaga II by then. Later in the holiday season there's Soul Calibur III, which looks amazing. . . and also the fourth SSX, also amazing looking. I may actually be hoping for a cold, snowy, roads-closed winter, so I can commune with games all season.

Also happening soon are two anime conventions. In October is OnnaFest, a convention dedicated to women and women's anime. So why am I going? Hey, I like me some cute anime here and there. . . don't judge me! In November is the best convention there is -- Anime USA! That's where I will be teaching a Mah Jongg workshop for three hours, huzzah, lotsa fun. I still have to buy Mah Jongg sets and prepare a handout for that. . . meh, I have three months, plenty of time. Unless I get all these games I want. . .

Birthdays are all over the place. My dad's birthday is tomorrow, and then a friend's birthday is on the 24th (Hi Bobbie!). . . then my older brother's birthday is at the end of September. . . then my younger brother and sister have theirs in the same week, at the end of october and beginning of November. Hey, I know. . . this year, we can celebrate by having everyone buy me a game! Oh, all the fun to be had! OK, sorry, sorry. . .

I was able to go shoot my Desert Eagle two weeks ago, twitch twitch grin drool. I had forgotten what a blast (ha!) that gun is to shoot. Despite all my attempts to ruin the experience (sorry again, Bobbie), it was a great time! But I have to mess around with the load for that gun, try a couple of different powders. . . and now I can clean it and use Mobil 1 to lube! I've wanted to try that for a year now. It will be cool to see how that works. Also worth noting -- my .45-70 rifle with the aperture sights KICKS ASS. Last time I had it out, I was dropping every shot into a 6" circle at 100 yards, and most of my 3-shot groups were 2" and under. I even managed to hit a 1" circle, it is amazing that I could even see that at 100 yards with an aperture sight. Damn, I love that gun!

Let's see, that's games, and guns. . . oh yeah, gazongas. Not much to report there. Still lotsa friendly girls, but no girlfriends. Well, unless you count Qihuai. . . which I do. Ni hao ma, Huai! You are the most beautiful 40-year old Italian guy on the internet! Thank you for the pictures!

Speaking of pictures. . . I won't have any for a while, not until I get my digital camera fixed, or give up and buy a new one. Or borrow my brother's. Not like you're missing much, all the pictures of me shooting look the same.

There we go. That should be sufficient for a month or so. Wo ai ni, Huai!

Like, later and stuff.

Son of Catch Up

Bleah. Another log of boring, everyday stuff.

So it is August. Lots of shopping days until Giftmas. July was mostly uneventful. I didn't get to go shooting nearly as much as I wanted to. That's my own damned fault, all I gotta do is grab a gun and head for the shooting club after work. I'm gonna try to be there at least every other weekend this fall, with the nice cool weather that is perfect for shooting.

Freeking Ebay! Freeking Mah Jongg! In November, I will be running a workshop at Anime USA, teaching people how to play Mah Jongg. To prepare for said workshop, I have been scanning Ebay on a daily basis for cheap Mah Jongg sets. Now it's a disturbing habit. There's just too much cool Mah Jongg stuff available. You might wonder why someone would need to have 15 sets of Mah Jongg tiles. . . but hey, why WOULDN'T you need them?

Here lies a fallen god, his fall was not a small one. . . we but built his pedestal, a narrow and a tall one. Neat quote from 'Dune Messiah'. I always wanted to read the Dune books by Frank Herbert; now I am reading them, and they are damned good. Just finished Dune Messiah last night; next is 'Children of Dune'. The story takes some neat turns. Can't say I like what happened to Paul at the end of Messiah, but it was fitting. Reading the books makes me appreciate what a good job they did with the movie from the 1980s. In particular, there is no mention whatsoever of the Weirding Modules that were a big part of the movie. There is a whole different mythos involved with the Femen, however. The book is able to take the time to fully explore the culture of the desert people, and the Fremen society is the cornerstone of the story in the next books. Good stuff!

Happy birthday, Patti! Being 30 is just like being any other age. Remember. . .the moment you feel too old to do something, do it!

Meh, that's all for now. Maybe some pictures next time, maybe not.
